The Base Knowledge, offered on-line through the University of Connecticut, course provides each participant with the foundation knowledge for successful social auditing. Participants take part in exercises, discussions and assignments in critical issue areas. Content learning is achieved through:

Exercises that include an activity and related questions that lead              participants through deeper levels of understanding.

Discussions among participants that enhance exploration of the topic              area, introduction of new ideas, and peer sharing of viewpoints and              experiences.

Assignments that ground and measure the learning in each topic area.              The final graded assignment is the development of a case study.

The five-day investigative skills workshops are designed for active CSR practitioners whose main responsibility is social auditing. Practitioners include external monitors, internal monitors, NGO and Civil Society organizations in the labor rights field, and workplace CSR staff. We offer sessions for advanced as well as entry level auditors.

The sessions build on the field experience of professional practitioners by enhancing practical skills and strategies. The course introduces a unifying Find, Ask Why, Resolve, Apply strategy to efficiently gather, validate and analyze information in order to most effectively address workplace conditions.

The sessions are highly interactive and experiential. Participants are involved in exercises, role plays, peer sharing, and other activities that enhance adult learning, including a live practicum in a local factory. The sharing and processing of peer and facilitator feedback from the mock audit is an particularly powerful aspect of the course.

The workshops are facilitated by seasoned trainers from participating organizations who have been certified to deliver RAISE courses. After the training, participants will be able to:

Fully assess levels of conformance to standards

Establish the direct causes of performance gaps

Understand and communicate steps needed to close gaps

               Develop a corrective action plan

1000 Base Knowledge Course (On-line)

1000 Investigative Skills Workshop

Social auditing is fundamental to improving working conditions worldwide.  Yet this vital input to corporate social responsibility programs has been practiced in the absence of a broadly accepted body of standards and required skills and knowledge.  Most social auditing, furthermore, does not take into account the important role of workers as key stakeholders and critical sources of information in the process.  The result has been the erosion of both the credibility and usefulness of social auditing as an integral component in ethical sourcing programs.

In response to this gap, Verité and CREA have collaborated with our NGO partners around the world to develop credible social auditing standards, and to accredit auditors through the RAISE 1000 Lead Auditor Certification program as meeting those standards.

There are three components to the RAISE 1000 Lead Auditor Certification program:

               Base Knowledge Course (on-line)

               Investigative Skills Workshop

               Certification Observation Audit
